Derek Jackson, LL. B.
I obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta and a law degree from the University of Victoria. I obtained calls in Alberta and British Columbia.
I have practised as a general civil litigator and argued cases before most levels of court in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. I have also practised as a solicitor, primarily related to matters involving residential real estate transactions, commercial leasing and commercial property management matters.
My practice of legal research began twenty years ago when I was hired by a long-standing Alberta law firm of about 50 lawyers.
Over the years, I have provided research, advice, direction and drafting services for all levels of Court in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and for the Supreme Court of Canada covering many areas of law including, but not limited to, corporate and commercial matters, securities, family, insurance, taxation, administrative law, bankruptcy and insolvency, environmental law, intellectual property, criminal law, labour and employment, motor vehicle, municipal law, personal injury, privacy, real estate, estates and trusts, fiduciary law and workers’ compensation.
I moved to Victoria about 12 years ago, assisting private law firms and in-house counsel of oil and gas companies. I also taught legal research and writing courses at the University of Victoria Law School.
I have been asked many times whether there is any one area of law that is my “expertise”. My stock answer is that my “expertise” is the ability to find, analyze and effectively communicate legal answers and opinions for all areas.
Navigate the law with confidence and success
